  • Chai Latte
  • Chai Latte

The chai latte is a traditional Indian drink that blends the depth of black tea with warming spices like cinnamon, ginger, and cardamom. Rooted in Ayurvedic tradition, it’s loved for its comforting feel and distinctive spiced flavour. Popular across India, chai has now become a worldwide favourite for cosy moments.

More than just a drink, the chai latte is a ritual of comfort—perfect for slowing down or sharing a warm, convivial moment. With its balance of spice, tea, and milk, it’s both soothing and vibrant, and can be enjoyed throughout the day.

    Prep time:

    10 minutes

    Ingredients:

    • 1 cup brewed black tea (about 250 ml water)
    • 1/2 cup milk (dairy or plant-based)
    • 1 cinnamon stick
    • 2 cloves
    • 2 cardamom pods
    • 1 slice fresh ginger (or 1/2 tsp ground ginger)
    • 1 star anise (optional)
    • A pinch of ground black pepper
    • 1 tbsp sugar or sweetener of choice (agave, maple syrup, etc.)

    Method:

    1. Brew the black tea: Steep 1 tsp black tea in 250 ml hot water for 3–5 minutes.
    2. Add the spices: In a small saucepan, pour in the brewed tea and add the cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, ginger, star anise (optional), and a pinch of black pepper. Simmer gently for about 5 minutes to infuse.
    3. Add the milk: Pour in your milk and warm gently—avoid boiling.
    4. Sweeten to taste: Add sugar or your preferred sweetener and stir until dissolved.
    5. Strain and serve: Remove the spices and strain through a fine sieve. Finish with a light dusting of cinnamon if you like.

    Tip:

For a creamier, café-style finish, froth your milk before serving. “Barista” oat milk or almond milk works especially well for a thicker foam.

    Nutritional note:

Chai latte provides antioxidants from black tea, while spices like cinnamon and ginger are appreciated for their digestive and comforting properties.

    When to drink it?

Ideal for a relaxing break mid-day or as a cosy late-afternoon drink. It also pairs beautifully with a snack or dessert.

    Diet type:

This recipe can be made vegan by using plant milk (oat, almond, soy, etc.). It’s also a lovely option if you want a comforting hot drink without going too heavy on caffeine.

    Enjoy!
