Matcha is a Japanese green tea in a fine powder form, made from shade-grown leaves that are stone-ground. Because you consume the whole leaf, you benefit from a concentrated intake of catechins, L-theanine, and chlorophyll—supporting long-lasting energy and a calm, focused feeling.
The most well-known producing areas include Uji, Nishio, and Shizuoka. Soil, climate, and shading techniques influence colour, flavour, and overall nutrient profile.
Tea plants are shaded for 20–30 days before harvest to increase chlorophyll levels. First-harvest leaves (ichibancha) typically yield the finest matcha.
| Grade | Characteristics | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Ceremonial | Delicate taste, vibrant green | Traditional ritual |
| Premium | Balanced flavour and intensity | Everyday enjoyment |
| Culinary | More robust aroma | Recipes and smoothies |
When selecting a quality matcha, look for a bright emerald-green colour, a smooth, sweet aroma, and minimal bitterness. Choose organic when possible, and opt for airtight packaging like our Organic Ceremonial Matcha.
The chasen (bamboo whisk), chawan (bowl), and chashaku (bamboo scoop) help create a silky foam and a perfectly blended cup.
Swap water for warm plant-based milk and add a drizzle of honey for a creamy version.
Mix matcha with cold water, ice cubes, and a splash of sparkling water for a refreshing drink.
Add 1 tsp of matcha to a banana–spinach smoothie for an antioxidant-rich boost.
One to two cups per day works well for most people: in the morning for a gentle lift, before a workout for endurance, or mid-afternoon to stay alert without the harsh “crash” many associate with coffee.
Store matcha in a cool, dry place, away from light and humidity—ideally in an airtight container to preserve colour and flavour.
If you’re sensitive to caffeine, avoid more than two cups a day and skip late-day matcha to protect sleep quality.
