The chasen is carved from a single piece of bamboo. Its fine tines break up the lumps and incorporate air, which gives that dense, creamy foam no spoon, no fork and no metal whisk will produce.
The chashaku measures. One full chashaku holds about 1 g of matcha: you find the same cup every morning, with no scales and no waste.

How do I use them?
Care
A well-treated chasen lasts for months.
• Rinse it in warm water right after use, never soap, never the dishwasher.
• Let it air-dry, tines pointing up, never in a closed cupboard.
• The chashaku is cleaned with a simple wipe of a dry cloth, or a quick rinse and thorough drying.
Bamboo is a living material: a few tines will eventually give way, that is normal and it is the sign it is time to replace it.

A matcha made with a spoon stays grainy and settles at the bottom of the cup. The chasen solves that in a few seconds.
Its tines, carved one by one from a single piece of natural bamboo, are supple enough to break up the lumps and numerous enough to incorporate air. That is what gives the fine, creamy foam you see in Japanese tea houses.
The gesture is learned in one cup: M or W shapes at the bottom of the bowl, loose wrist, twenty seconds. No stirring in circles, no force.
Unlike a metal whisk, bamboo does not alter the taste and does not scratch your bowl.
Too much matcha and the cup turns astringent. Not enough and all you have is green water. The bamboo matcha scoop removes that hesitation.

Why not just use an ordinary spoon and whisk?
A teaspoon measures very inconsistently, from single to double depending on how you fill it.
A metal whisk does not have enough tines to incorporate air: you get a mixed liquid, never a foam. It can also scratch your bowl and leave a metallic taste.
Should I prepare the chasen before first use?
Yes, and it changes everything. Soak the tines in hot water for about thirty seconds before the first use. The bamboo softens, the tines spread out and break far less.
